Follow your passion. Do what you love and you’ll love what you do.
Not according to Cal Newport…
He says this is wrong – a bogus and backward view.
In his excellent book, So Good They Can’t Ignore You, Newport argues that we should stop constantly looking for more fulfilling work. Instead, do the work in front of us now exceedingly well.
Don’t follow your passion, lead your passion.
When you excel at what you do passion follows. In the author’s words, “doing work right trumps finding the right work.”
People tend to have either a passion mindset or a craftsman mindset.
Passion minded people ask what the world can do for them…and rarely find passion.
Craftsman minded people ask what they can do for the world…and often find passion.
So stop looking for better and get better. Become a master at what’s in front of you now. You’ll become recognized, respected, and paid accordingly – and you’ll likely grow to love what you do.
The key point for today?
If you want to find your passion, stop searching for the right work and excel at the work in front of you now.
Become so good they can’t ignore you.
